Rubber Grooming Glove

This time of year our cat seems to be growing fur at an alarming rate and discarding it all over the house even faster! One tip that was suggested to us was to brush her more often using a grooming brush or similar product so I ran Pet Smart and found the Rubber Grooming Glove. Our cat, Miss Kitty, seems to enjoy the petting and has far fewer furballs and I get less fur on my bed where she likes to sneak and roll around when I’m no watching.

From the packaging:

Versatile glove can be used dry to remove loose hair, or use when bathing your dog to offer a thorough cleaning and massage. 1/4″ rubber knobs stimulate the skin while removing loose hairs. Great for washing or rinsing. Fits either right or left hand.

At $6.99 these things are cheap enough to have a couple around! Check out the Rubber Grooming Glove yourself.

Michael Vick Sentenced to 23 Months

posted by Aeryn in Dogs, News on 01/18/08 at 04:01 PM

Michael Vick, once one of the highest paid players in the National Football League, was sentenced to 23 months in prison for financing a dogfighting ring and helping to kill pit bulls that did not fight aggressively. According to court documents, dogs that failed to show enough fighting spirit or lost matches were executed. Some dogs died by electrocution and others by hanging or drowning. Vick’s stunning downfall from NFL superstar to disgraced dogfighting defendant culminated Monday in a 90-minute sentencing hearing in federal court in Richmond, Virginia.

More than 50 pit bulls were seized from Vick’s property in June. I can’t even imagine having a couple dogs let alone OVER 50! This guy has to be crazy. Who in their right mind could actually kill a dog for being too nice? I think he should be zapped with electricity once a day, every day, for the 23 months he’ll be in prison. If you ask me I think he should be locked up for a LONG TIME. Anyone who can be so cruel to an animal would have no problem hurting another human being.

Skooperbox

We all need to do our part to clean up the earth. Change begins at the individual level, and Skooperbox is the way that dog lovers can make a real difference today – one scoop at a time. It is made from 100% recycled material and is 100% biodegradable.

These little boxes are amazing and only take days to break down, compared to the 1,000 years it takes a plastic bag to decompose. The Skooperbox even attaches to your dog’s leash so your hands remain free! I am seriously thinking about buying some of these for one of my neighbors. EVERY DAY he walks his adorable little dog by my house and every single day he let’s his dog shat around my mailbox. The annoying part is the he doesn’t pick it up! He just walks off like it’s no big deal that the next time I go check the mail I will have to hop around the mines just to get my mail. Maybe I should just do like that one car commercial and start picking it up for him and then leave it by HIS mailbox with a note that says, “You dropped this.”

You can get your own at Skooperbox.com.

Having a Dog May Improve Health

posted by Chrispian in Dogs, Health, Medicine on 01/17/08 at 03:01 PM

girl_with_dog.jpg

Dogs have long had special standing in the medical world. Trained to see for the blind, hear for the deaf and move for the immobilized, dogs have become indispensable companions for people with disabilities.

The NY Times is running a story about how dogs may contribute to better health. I think most pet owners would agree, and especially dog owners. It’s obvious that having a pet is soothing. They love unconditionally and they are fun to play with and generally warm our hearts. Dogs have the added benefit of potentially saving lives by warning of danger, or even helping someone out of danger like a fire. They are also more active and more than likely that will make their owners more active too. I think the healing power is in caring for them, and they for us.

I read another story where scientists are teaching dogs to sniff out cancer, and it’s working! Our furry friends may end up saving our lives in more ways than one.

Employers and Pet Insurance

posted by Aeryn in Articles, Dogs, Pet Care on 01/16/08 at 05:01 PM

Veterinary Pet Insurance, the nation’s largest pet insurer, saw its corporate accounts balloon from 15 to 1,600 in the past six years. About 15 percent of Veterinary Pet Insurance’s policies, or about 50,000, now come from its corporate accounts.

More and more employers are offering pet health insurance these days because they have realized that most households have at least one pet. It also doesn’t hurt that the insurance doesn’t cost them a dine since the employee pays the full cost of the coverage. For most companies, pet insurance is simply a way to help employees at no cost to the bottom line.

Scientists Develop Dark Bark Recognition Software

posted by Chrispian in Dogs, News, Science on 01/16/08 at 01:01 PM

What would a dog say if it could talk? “Stranger”, “fight”, “walk”, “alone”, “ball” and “play”, according to scientists who have developed a computer programme to translate dog barks.

The special programme analysed more than 6,000 barks from 14 Hungarian sheepdogs in six different situations.

The software is designed to recognize different dog barks to identify things like “play”, “ball”, “strange”, etc. but so far is only accurate about 43% of the time. With more time and research they could possibly get this to a much higher success rate. I doubt this could get to the point where we are having 2-way conversations with a dog, but it could certainly have some very fun and interesting applications.

Daily Mail has the full story.
